Living in Fear

I was having bad dreams. Things had improved. I could sleep comfortablely when i was in Sabah with Teresa for few days.

I came back on Wednesday and straight for a full moon dinner of my cousin’s newborn. The next day, I was caught up with appointments and complaints. In fact, I slept quite “early” about 10 pm but mum woke me up. She wanted me to park the car inside the porch. Before I could go back to my bed, she read the news to me. She told me about the news report, gang raped which happened in Johor. We had a short chat about the unsafe environment we are in and the seriousness of crime in the country.

Then, bad dreams came back that night.

I dreamt of snakes. Snakes were surrounding me and trying to bite me. Snake, a reptile which I fear most. When I watch tv, I will switch to another channel if it is showing this reptile. When I visit the Zoo, I would avoid the cages with snakes.

What is the message in the dream?

One thing for sure, I am living in fear. Not only am fear for the safety of myself but more for my family members. Whenever I receive forwarded emails warning or sharing about experiences of how the sender’s friend was attacked, I would send a sms to my sister and warn her. If I read about a crime incident happened in Puchong area, similarly, I would do the same. My dad too. When he heard from his friends about the “latest” approach taken by criminal to trick or attack the victim, dad would tell me. Again, I will share with my sister and my comrades.

Still remember that Pak Lah did once express his sadness over the high crime rate? If I am not mistaken, when the victim was killed. What has happened to the promises of safe environment? Money is allocated, manpower increased by thousands, cctvs, task force, increased of patrol cars and rakan cop, yet, myself and millions out there are still living in fear. The latest incidents of robbery-gang raped in Johor only show that situation has not improved but getting worst despite all the abovestated actions.

Pak Lah, this is within your jurisdiction and under your Ministry. Blame not the women and this is not about not trusting or co-operating with the police.

Is about your leadership.

I still fear snakes but fear for the safety of my loved ones more!

  2. Fong,

    How are you doing?

While I can appreciate your busy schedule and fully understand your lack of time, updating your blogs should be one of your top priorities.

In Boleh-land, where the mass media are being controlled by the ruling parties, the Internet becomes a very important medium to converse your political views to your audiences.

I also strongly believe you should limit your postings to that of current issues, political or otherwise. Should you decide you want to write about your life, sleep habits, reptiles or any personal items of interests, may I humbly suggest starting a separate blog for that purpose.

What about the issue of the Alantuya murder? The recent floods in downtown KL? The Deputy Minister who received bribes to free criminals? The imminent coming of the GE?

Being an avid follower of political blogs by Malaysian writers, I find your lack of updates and inconsistent contents rather disappointing.

  5. Dear YB,

I notice a disturbing trend here. There is a pattern whereby violent crime is mainly perpetuated against the Malaysian Chinese.

    I can give 2 reasons:

    1) it is a common preception that Chinese are the richest amongst the 3 races in Malaysia.
    2) Chinese are timid, selfish and less likely to put up a fight. Imagine trying to rob a malay woman in her kampung and chances are, the whole village will come out for a gotong royong session. It has been told many times that if one run over a chicken in a malay kampung, drive to the nearest police station (and hope the dead chicken does not belong to any of the officers in the station)

I remember reading in sin chew, a malay man came into an internet cafe in JB, robbed every customers bar one, who was a malay. The 5 minute lucrative venture was captured on film.

More disturbingly, (heard this from my co-worker), recently she was with her friend (both were chinese) when the friend was attacked by mat rempits while they were still in their car. The lady managed to drive to the nearest police station with a gapping wound on her head.

The malay police officer there told her that she wanted to finish watching her tv show before attending to the wounded victim. They had to call their boyfriends and went to hospital themselves.

That’s why, a couple of days ago, chinese here are the least to rely on any government department to solve their problems.

anyway, Leon, this is Ms Fong’s blog and she can post whatever she wants to. I would speculate that certain articles are to vent her personal frustration.

I do like to hear more about those stuff that you mention but then again it is up to Ms Fong to put up what she wants. Isn’t this freedom of speech that we want?

If you want more action, perhaps we can go to malaysia today, lim kit siang and teresa kok who has been active in June.

  6. Please try to understand a DAP MP is a really busy person. She has to attend to issues like blocked drains, uncollected rubbish, etc. which an efficient municipality or town council would have taken care of.

She has to attend events organised by other MPs, and ADUNs which require her to travel all over the country. Unlike the BN MPs, Parliamentary attendance is taken seriously.

As for her website, it reflects her personality and her special concern over certain issues. LKS has already taken care of many important issues. Imagine all the other MPs doing the same!

I would agree with her that our crime situation is alarming. Whenever my daughters are back from abroad, my worries begin.

Please do your bit as a M’sian. There is no more safety in M’sia and this petition is to ask the police force to do a better job.

  8. Hi, fong. I accidentally found your blog and decided to check it out. Here’s the thing about dream. If you are dreaming of snakes trying to bite you, we malays think that it means that many guys around you are trying to ‘hit’ on you…if you got what i mean. So, watch out for those single handsome guys..ok. And those ‘itchy’ married ones….just ignore them. cheers.

  9. I so agree with you. There is NO SUCH THING as a SAFE environment here anymore, not even in your office or in the house, car. Wherever. I was assaulted in my own house; my house got broken into, my cars got smashed couple of times.

    This is too much.

  10. YB Fong Po Kuan is a good MP. My area is Wangsa Maju. Since 2006, there have been serious crimes resulting in at least a death of a student & an attempted rape & near murder of a female student this year. TAR College’s intake has dropped because this area has been labelled a ‘black area’. Constant patrolling by the police & the re-introduction of Rukun Tetangga (neighbourhood watch) are very important to our country these days…..

  11. It is time to re-introduce Rukun Tetangga for all areas starting with Kuala Lumpur…….

  14. KS Ong, you are not alone. My family share the same feeling each time I come home for a visit. I was never allowed to go and get the car at the car park alone, my sisters will take turn to take me wherever I want to go and I was 31!!!!
